The Freshgro Team had a dream of ‘ owning the whole supply chain” in order to have control over the standard and quality of products being packed and supplied to our buyers. In 2022 this dream became a reality and we are very proud of owning our own citrus packing facility – FRESHCO CITRUS PACKERS (PTY) LTD.
The packhouse operates with the latest Compac Spectrim technology to ensure that each box contains what the client desires. By implementing state-of-the-art equipment and expertise, the fruit is sorted, graded and packed according to market or customer specifications. All packaging carries the relevant information to ensure that the fruit can be traced back to its origin at all times. The fruit then enters the cold chain to maintain a constant low-temperature environment to effectively guarantee the freshness of the fruit on arrival.
Currently the packhouse operates a day and night shift and employs around 400 local seasonal employees.
The packhouse is BRC, SIZA & GLOBAL G.A.P. Chain of Custody accredited and strive to meet national and international quality and food safety standards.
Having our own facility gives us the advantage of being more flexible to pack in differenct client brands and accommodate requests from the market.
Once our citrus fruit is harvested, it is transported to our modern packhouse facility which is ideally located for processing, treatment, separation, and packaging before the fruit is inspected and transported to clients around the world. The packhouse is equipped with state of the art computerised systems, where fruit is automatically sorted according to diameter, mass, colour, shape and blemishes.
